Wes Ford:

Gum Springs Patriarc - George Washington's Slave Son?

In light of the recent revelations about Thomas Jefferson, much has been written lately about the probability that George Washington also fathered children by slave women. The local Washington Area press seems to support the Mount Vernon Ladies Association's contention that this premise is false. But, they are vehemently opposed to conducting DNA tests. Why? It is common knowledge that slave owners used female slaves for sexual pleasure. Are we supposed to believe that George Washington didn't? It is also probable that many slave owners, as did Thomas Jefferson, fell in love with their slave mistresses. Was West Ford truly Washington's son? Isn't it about time for the truth to be told.

  3. While the possibility of George Washington being West Ford's father, has been complicated by historical records of his whereabouts at the time of conception, has the possibility of Bushrod Washington, George's oldest nephew, been considered? While it isn't as much of a "headline grabber", it seems that it would be very significant, as it would have made West Ford a grand-nephew to George Washington, and may have accounted for his close relationship, and his sister-in law, Hannah Bushrod Washington's interest in providing for West Ford's well-being, if she knew he was her grandson. She may have felt very responsible for his education and future, as to any grand-child. Has anything been written about this? It would be an interesting link to investigate that would explain the resemblance to George Washington, even given George's apparent infertility.

  4. If George Washington's oldest nephew, Bushrod, were West Ford's father, it would explain George's familiarity actions as "taking him under his wing", as the child of his nephew. It would make sense that both George, and his sister-in-law, Hannah, who would have been West Ford's grand-mother, in this situation, may have felt the responsibility for their kin, to help West Ford have an education and freedom and land, given his parentage by Bushrod, Hannah's son and George Washington's nephew, if that had been the case. It would be an interesting connection to George Washington, and perhaps West Ford's relationship with George Washington was formative in moving George to move toward freeing those he had enslaved and had "inherited" as enslaved people working on his farm, and helped his attitudes evolve on the matter of slavery, eventhough his way of life could not be sustained without the labor of enslaved people.

  5. While it is an incontrovertible fact that many pregnancies resulted from unwanted sexual contact by enslaving men with women who were enslaved workers on their plantations, it may have been Bushrod Washington, rather than George Washington, who fathered West Ford. That would've made George's sister-in law, Hannah, and George Washington, (perhaps as a great-uncle to West Ford), responsible parties in West Ford's upbringing and future, and perhaps feeling guilty for the actions of what may have been a young Bushrod Washington, George's nephew. There's no mistaking the family resemblance of West Ford, with George and his deceased brother Augustine's appearance; but it seems valueable to look into whether the way West Ford was part of George Washington's extended family, may have been through his nephew, Bushrod, rather than directly from him, given the historical record regarding his inability to father children, and Martha's son from a prior marriage being their only child, and his whereabouts being far from Venus, West's mother, during the conception window of time. Having Bushrod Washington as his father would seem to be a significant historical feature of the Mount Vernon Estate's legacy, as West Ford was it's trusted caretaker, and of George Washington's relationship with George. I haven't found anything written on this, researching this possibility, but I wonder if the museum can recommend any reading or research done to investigate the journals or writings of Bushrod Washington or his wife, regarding his whereabouts, age, and proximity to Venus, to reveal any possible connection between them?
